Meaning of Matiz
Inspired by color. Matiz (mah.teez) translates to the word hue in Spanish. Hue is the word most people think of when using the word color or shade of color. In color theory, hue is one of the main properties of a color. We wanted the name of Matiz to be meaningful and in Spanish. We play with different shades of hues/colors as a form of self-expression. Each color at Matiz gets hand mixed, and we use primary colors to create different shades.
Each handmade piece is created in a range of colors and shapes. Our goal is to bring confidence to others to wear what inspires them. Working with polymer clay is a unique and theraupeuric process, and we take pride in our work. Each design is slow-made in small quantities with intention. We find inspiration for our statement jewery from textiles, ceramics, abstract art, textures, and nature. We hope that you can appreciate your one-of-a-kind jewelry.
The Process
Clay earrings start off from a block of polymer clay, a very lightweight material. Each item is lovingly rolled out, conditioned, color mixed, cut, baked in the oven, sanded and assembled by hand. Sustainability is a core value at Matiz. No clay is ever wasted. Designs are made in small-batches. Leftover clay gets reused to create unique shades of colorways to minimize waste. We do our best to avoid using plastic. Our packaging boxes can be reused or repurposed, and shipping supplies are eco-friendly and sustainable. Earrings are friendly for sensitive skin. We use a mix of 14k, 18k, and 24k gold posts, jump rings, and backings to ensure people with sentitive ears can wear our designs. Earrings are also lead-free and nickle-free.
Behind Matiz
Bienvenidos y gracias por estar aquí.
My name is Elizabeth and i'm the designer behind Matiz. I was born in Tijuana, México and Yakima Valley has been my home for the past 20+ years. Matiz began as a creative outlet after graduating from college. I find inspiration for Matiz in the shades of sunsets, the vibrant colors of my Mexican culture, ceramics, textures, and minimal abstract art. I enjoy learning different clay techniques and incorporating them in designs. There's endless possibilities of what one can create with polymer clay, that's what makes it fun and enjoyable to learn.
Random fact: One of my favorite artist is Matisse. The impact of simple shapes and beautiful colors is amazing.
Being creative has always brought me so much happiness, whether it was crocheting, knitting, painting, etc. When I'm not creating, I spend my time cooking and experimenting with recipes, hiking, going on walks with my doggie, and spending time with my family.
Your support means the world to me, and sharing my creations with you brings me so much joy. You can find me on Instagram at @matiz.clay
